Golds at Lincoln Villiage
Working out at Lincoln Villiage with Marcus is usually a good time. The gym is pretty sad - small and old - but they have the only steam bath in town, which is always good for relaxation and (when its not steaming) conversation.
So, we met up at about 2pm and hit the treadmills. Started out at a 10:00 pace, then increased up to an 8:00. I really wanted to do a mile at that speed, especially since I’d done five miles at 9:00 just one week before. Half a mile in, I was breathing so hard that my throat was getting sore! Since I have to run 10 miles tomorrow, I slowed it on down to a fast walk to get my cardio back under control. Turns out that there’s a big difference between 9:00 and 8:00! My final was about a 10:30 average over 2.5 miles - I never did get my wind completely back after that run. While I was going though, I felt really good - especially my legs.
Its a little sobering to think that to qualify for Boston I’ll have to run the whole distance faster than that one little half mile… still, I’ve come so far already, and I am giving myself another five years to get back to Beantown.
After the run, we were both pretty tanked. Still, its time to hit the bench. Did 10×25s, and they felt like 35s. Then 10×30s, and by the time it came to do the 35s, I managed … three? I was tapped out. After that, we did a tricep/row/pulldown rotation (50/90/100) and then some bicep negatives (45lb dumbells) alternated with shoulder circles (3×10 lbs, arms extended down, out, and up). Wrapped up with some ab work (2 sets of leg lifts/crunches/laterals) and it was time to hit the steam room.
So, not a record-setting workout by any stretch of the imagination, but it still gave us a good burn. It had been over a week for me anyway to really work out, not counting Monday’s pathetic effort.
During the steaming, we talked some more about the marathon. Marcus did it in 2002, and has a wealth of good advice and tips. If I can just remember all of them, I should be fine!
