Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Treadmill Speedwork

I think that my favorite form of speedwork has to be on the treadmill. And, in a possibly related note, my only really fun treadmill activity is usually speedwork. Oh, and long, constant impossible hills - but I don’t do those very often.

Anyway, today we were supposed to do 3 reps of 1200m (.75 miles). I didn’t do that. That’s mainly because the last, and longest, speedwork that we did was one minute increments. I’ll jump up to the longer duration next time. What I actually did was four reps of 800m (.5 miles) at 7.5mph (8 minute pace), separated by four minute rest periods (3.2mph walk).

Its pretty amazing to me that, even when you add in my long warmup period and all of that slow walking, I still did a 5K in 33 minutes. Before I started this training program, my record 5K time was … wait for it … 33 minutes. Now, indoors on a treadmill I had managed to hit 30 minutes (once, with difficulty), but still, its a pretty impressive comparison.

How did I feel then? Pretty lousy, but happy to have done it. How do I feel now? [shrug] Pretty normal actually - like I could have done twice as much. But I do have to stretch some more - in the shower I noticed that the fronts of my knees were a little sore when I straightened my legs completely, which is probably not good.
