Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Whoo… tiring workout!

Okay, so we hit the Golds on 290. 15 minutes of elliptical to warmup, then over to bench. I did 10×25, 10×35 and then, well, 3×45 (more like 2 1/2). Then ended the last set with 10×25. Getting better, nonetheless - I think that that was the first time I’ve done 45s without starting with them.

Next, over to dumbells where I did a 3 rotation set: curls (3 of 15×25), one-arm tricep (15×15, 15×15, 10×15), and one-arm horizontal row (15×35, 15×40, 15×40). Then to back, with pulldowns (just 3 of 10×80) and extensions (3 of 15×160). Ending with some abs (2 of 10 reps with laterals and the medicine ball).

How did it feel? Lousy. I think I got a bit dehydrated today (been drinking, but all caffinated - diet coke or tea). Felt a little woozy at the end, and my calves started cramping slightly which is why I cut out of the rest of the crunches. Hit 20 ounces of PowerAde on my way back to the office, which helped some. Need to drink more tonight.

Why? I have to run 15.6 miles tomorrow morning! That’ll be a new distance record for me by 3 miles or so. And a very good reason to stay hydrated.
