Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Good workout

Well, I started with a simple set of 20 minutes on the elliptical, hill profile. Followed that up with a pretty decent leg workout since I’m not doing a whole lot of running early this week - 3 sets each of 4 exercises: leg press (90,180,180 lbs), standing single leg curls (50 lbs), single leg extensions (45,55,65 lbs), and seated calf raises (45,70,95 lbs). Pretty light compared to what I was doing before I started running, but heavy enough for my current condition.

After that, it was bicep/tricep time - dumbells, curling 25 for bi, 17.5 for tri. Could only get 8 on the last set with my left bicep, 5 on the last with my left tricep. Felt good though, especially the triceps. Next, we tried to do abs. This was when I found out that my back was hurting - every time I even tried a simple curl, it didn’t feel good (to put it mildly). A little worrisome, but I’m going to try a hot bath and rubdown today, and see if it goes away before getting too concerned about it. Next was some back work - laying face down on an incline bench we did flies and back extensions (10 lb dumbells), set with front extensions and side->top. 3 sets, 10 reps of each exercise.

That was it for the workout. Felt pretty good, except for the back issues. Tomorrow I’m going to get a new set of measurements from Rick at Gold’s - we’ll see if I’ve changed my body composition at all. Since I’ll be at the gym, I’ll at least run there. Then Wendesday I’m getting a theraputic massage for my legs, and will probably try to do another workout as well. All in all, a busy week.
