Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Time for a little leg

Jason and I got together for a quick leg workout before lunch. Warmed up with 15 minutes on the elliptical, then headed for the stations - crowded today. Because of that, we did 3 sets on the … I don’t know what they’re called. The lateral leg things I guess - one where you open like you’re doing the splits, and then the reverse one. Started at 70lbs, then 80 for the last two sets.

After that, the regular stations were emptier. We did 3 sets on 3 machines, in a somewhat more random order than would generally have been preferred. In each set, I did 15 reps of 80 lbs on the leg extensions and leg curls, then 15 reps of 160 lbs on the leg press. I also got some calf stretching in on the press during downtime. It got a little annoying trying to do rotations when a trainer commandeered one of the machines for a newbie - she wasn’t really interested in working in, and had the “I’m a trainer and you’re less important than my client is,” attitude that is, thankfully, still fairly rare at Gold’s.

After that was all over, we just did a little back and shoulder work. Did inverse flies and pull backs (3 sets, 10 reps, 10 lbs) and some one arm rows (3 sets, 10 reps, 40-45-45 lbs). Finished up with two sets of 45 lb dumbell shrugs, and then called it a day.
