Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

7 mile loop

Well, as I mentioned, on Tuesdays I’m supposed to go out and run seven miles. So I did - I used the MoPac to I-35 loop around Town Lake. And I was in sad shape, let me tell you. It was 80 degrees out - probably 20 degrees higher than I’ve ran in for several months - and way too humid. I didn’t have any water with me, and this was the first time since the marathon that I’d run over a 5K, and only the second time that I’d ran at all.

Anyway. I try to park down on South 1st like I normally do, and its closed due to SXSW. Fine. I end up parking by the Y and taking the underpass down to the trail. Its about 6pm, and the trail is packed. I don’t normally run in the evenings, so I don’t know if this is normal for a Tuesday or if its because of the SXSW crowd, but either way, its hard to weave around people. Then again, it did improve the scenery quite a bit, so I’m not complaining.

My original goal was to do a 9:00 pace around the loop. It turned out that that wasn’t going to happen. My cardio has really taken a beating from my month off! Between that, and the climate, I was running more like a 9:30-10:00 pace, and I ended up having to walk a lot as well. In fact, I was only able to average an 11:00 total pace! This is bad, folks. I need to get my act together and figure out what happened to me. I also need to start running in the mornings.
