Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Leg Workout

Alright, so its another quick workout. I almost didn’t do any lower body strength this week, but I had about 45 minutes after my Town Lake Trail Foundation meeting and Stephanie getting home, so I hit the Gold’s on 290. Gold’s may not be a great gym, but there’s one everywhere…

I was very bad, and didn’t do any warmup. I realized that this was a bad idea when my left quad started aching on the drive home. I’ll try not to do it again. This gym’s machines were all nautilus-style instead of taking weight plates, and the load felt slightly harder for a given weight.

Single leg lifts (hamstrings): 70 lbs
Single leg extensions (quads): 70 lbs (-10 from last week)
Single leg seated calf raises: 80,90,100 lbs
Seated leg press: 230 lbs (+30 from last week)

The calf raises were, again, hard. Especially the last set at 100 - but I only did 8 of those.

Adductors (legs together): 180 lbs
Abductors (legs apart): 180 lbs

I was getting a little tired, and I’m doing speedwork tomorrow, so I took it easy and only did 180/200 lbs on these ones! I also skipped doing lunges of any sort.

The bad news is that I was going to do my track workout tomorrow evening with Mixon’s Runtex group. Stephanie reminded me that we already have a commitment to meet some friends in San Antonio for dinner, which pretty much rules out an evening workout in Austin. If I go tomorrow morning, that’s only about 10 hours break. Maybe I can do something over lunch? Its possible, but that means a treadmill. Hmm. I’ll think of something, I’m sure. I don’t want to miss another speedwork session whatever happens. Maybe early Friday, which is otherwise an “off” day, would be better?
