Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Healthy Eating

Okay, so I’m trying (recent lapses ignored for now) to be more healthy in my eating habits. I’m mainly trying to cut back on the number of calories I consume, but I’d also like to just get a little healthier in general.

Here’s my thinking. My weight has been pretty much constant at 180 (+/- 2) for a while now. Without counting, measuring, or computing anything, if I eat less than I have been without changing my habits, my weight should go down.

I know - that violates a lot of “diet advice.” But hey, its a big part of how I lost my previous 55 pounds.

So here’s what I’m doing. I’m picking a “big meal” per day - either lunch or dinner. That meal, I eat exactly what I would have eaten. The other meal, I have a snack instead, something in the 200-400 calorie range. Or nothing, if I’m not hungry.

Sound too simple to be true? It may be. Let’s see what happens.

Cool blog, I’ve only read a couple entries and I can already tell I like your sense of humor.

How does your thinking above violate “diet advice?” Seems to make perfect sense to me! Calories in equals less than calories out, and you lose weight, viola! (in theory)

Thanks again for the spreadsheets. There were a bunch of women in the locker room this morning who were heading to Boston for the Boston Marathon Monday. Exciting!
