Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

ITB Flare Up

Maybe its because of the extra distance that I did last weekend, or just my general stress level right now. Who knows. But this morning, when I got up at 5am for my Tuesday 7-miler, my ITB was tight. Really tight. Tight as in I could feel it just walking to the alarm clock. So I did the sensible thing - turned it off, sighed, and went back to bed. I then proceeded to oversleep, so I probably needed the rest anyway.

I would really like this injury to just go away. I’ve been told by a massuse that I would benefit from seeing a chiropractor because my hips are slightly out of alignment - maybe its related? I should probably go and do that, but there’s so much other stuff going on I hate to add a new set of appointments to the middle of it.

Still. I packed my running gear, so if its still light when I get out of the office, and my leg is feeling better, I can go run. If not… there’s always tomorrow.

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...

Alarm clocks are the work of Satan.

Do you wear an orthotic to help align your hips?

(Can you sense that I’m all aglow right now? I am. I’m freakin’ toxic.)

  2. No, I don’t. I really haven’t done anything about it. In fact, I didn’t even know that I was out of alignment until I started getting massages leading up to the marathon, and by that point I didn’t want to change anything drastic or start any new treatments, etc. But now I really don’t have much of an excuse, other than recovering from April 15th.
