Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Playing with the Schedule

Alright, now that I’m doing two intense speed workouts every week, the schedule I’d done before isn’t going to work for me. Not that I was following it very closely anyway…

So. I have my workouts on Tuesday and Thursday. These will average 5-6 miles each with a ton of speedwork. I’m going to try to add in four miles on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or some crosstraining, but I won’t beat myself up if I don’t get to it.

On the weekends, I’m going to do at least a half-marathon distance - total. So if I’m not racing, that’s a 13.1 mile long easy run. And I do mean easy - just going for distance and relaxation here. I’ll try to work on my form, my breath control, and just have fun. If I do a race, I’ll deduct that amount and run the rest. For example, this coming weekend I’m doing the Chuy’s 5K on Saturday morning. That leaves me with 10 miles to do on Sunday.

All of that distance - M/W/F/weekend - may be done on the bike instead. If I end up riding 16 miles at Rocky Hill Ranch or Walnut Creek, for example, I won’t feel the need to do my run. I can say this because I really don’t bike all that much these days, so it won’t happen very often. I should end up with between 23 and 37 miles per week, depending on how often I run - which is fine. I doubt I’ll do more than 30 in any given week at this point.

Today, I didn’t run in the morning. I think that I’ll get the dog and do some jogging this evening instead, if I can time it so that its still light when we get back but not too warm when we head out. Assuming that I’m not working too late, of course.

Isnt’ is dogS? What happened to the new addition?

  2. Sabrina’s supposed to be “keeping quiet” until she finishes her heartworm treatment - another week or two. I’m not sure that running would be much more strenuous than wrestling with Bear, or bouncing at the door because we’re home … but I figure that its better safe than sorry.

Bear will probably appreciate the attention anyway. He hasn’t really been shortchanged, we’ve tried to make sure of that, but its a big adjustment going from only-pup to one of two.

  3. Sounds like a good, well-balanced plan. I love the half marathon distance. I think it’s my favorite race distance.

On another topic, I notice you use the Forerunner. So do I. How do you like it? I love mine.

  4. I’m an addict. I also pull each of my runs off one at a time to keep the high resolution (it compresses every run except the most recent) and store them in GPX format, which I then use TopoFusion to plot out. Geeky, eh?
