Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Didn’t I decide last time not to run with Bear in the neighborhood, just the park? Oh, well. We did a nice 3.2 mile loop, but there was just too much going on in the way of smells for him to be focused. There are no sidewalks for a good stretch of it too, and I found out that while it isn’t a big deal for me to just run on the grass for a few seconds when a car comes, getting him far enough into the grass to be safe was a real pain. We generally stopped and waited a good 10 seconds per car, which got frustrating - for me at least.

Anyway, I was trying to keep this one pretty slow, since my calves are still sore from yesterday’s workout. We did the first two miles at a 10:38 and 10:32 pace respectively, and probably averaged about a 9:30 actual running speed (plus the breaks). He was pulling me all over the place and it wasn’t a great workout, but it was nice to spend some quality time together anyway.

After two miles, he got very interested in some smells so I just kinda gave up and walked him for a while, letting him bound all over the place (we use a flexi-leash) and enjoy the day. We did another half mile at about a 10:00 pace a bit later, but that was it - stopped and walked him in.

So … he had fun, and I added about 2.5 more miles to my total and got to stretch my legs out somewhat. All in all, there are worse ways to spend an evening!
