Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Post Chuy’s run

After hanging around for an hour or so after the race, doing some stretching talking to friends, and eating three Krispy Kreme donuts (less than one per mile), it was time to head back. Alex ran with me for the first mile as a cooldown run, and we did between a 9:45 and a 10:30, then I picked up a little to do the last .3 to the car in about 27 minutes. Stopped, stretched a little more, called home, took off my race badge, and decided to do some extra running while I had the chance.

I headed from Deep Eddy to Mopac (.25 miles), got a drink and stretched some more, then did a slow, comfortable run out along the river to the Lamar bridge (10:00). I had a quick chat with some folk from the Town Lake Trail Foundation working on the gardens, then ran hard up the stairs and over the bridge. This time I took the (less?) scenic route, running through Town Lake Park before rejoining the riverside trail a little further on. I kept it pretty quiet, doing a 10:30 average pace back to Mopac, drinking and stretching again, and then jogging back to the car.

So, for the day, that’s:
Warmup: 1.3
Race: 3.1
Cooldown 1.3
Lamar Loop: 3.9
Total: 9.6 running miles

Not bad, not bad. And I only need 3.5 tomorrow to hit my goal for the weekend, which I can do with a single neighborhood loop. This time, without the dawg, although I think my wife is planning on coming with me for a fun bike ride while I slog it out on foot.

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...
