Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

800m Circuit

This time I did the afternoon workout rather than the morning one. I was still pretty tired, getting into Austin at around 3am the night before and only catching about 4 hours of sleep will do that for you. Still, I didn’t want to miss the workout. I got to RunTex by 5:30 and did a little stretching - and a little sweating. It was only about 70 degrees, but the humidity was up at 90% again and having the sun beat down on you makes a huge difference. I’m going to try really hard to avoid the afternoon workouts in the future.

Anyway, we headed over to AHS as usual. This time, I did a 9:02 pace for our warmup run. There were more slow people at the afternoon workouts, including a couple of folk significantly behind my pace which is unusual. The drills at AHS were a lot less organized too, with everyone doing them at different rates rather than the whole group moving en mass up and down the track. After those were done, we were given our workout for the day.

We had to do three 800 circuits. That’s running 800 meters (Gilbert said, “Run easy, listen to your body.”), doing 10 bench step-ups, 10 push ups, 10 Russian sit ups, 10 vertical jumps, and 10 lunges. Then doing that whole cycle twice more, with no recovery in between any of it. I guess I cheated a little, stopping 15 seconds for a drink after each run, but I was sweating up a storm out there. My 800m times were pretty slow, running an 8:59 pace for the first, 8:47 for the second, and 8:55 for the third.

After those were over, we did some more running form work, more jumping, and even more form work. Then we were told that we could go - that was it. So a pretty light workout compared to last week’s, but still effective. My calves were screaming at me during it too - I don’t think they’ve really recovered effectively from running the hills at Chuy’s last weekend. I guess that means I need to be stretching more during the day.

On the way back, I ran very slowly because I was chatting with Daniel, who was running slowly. We only did an 11:04 average, although that did include some walking. He looked pretty beat, but it was a great cooldown for me and I was able to do some drills along the way (mainly butt-kicks) and enjoy a pleasant conversation, so that’s alright. Some more stretching, and I was done.
