Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Unpleasant Cramping

Well, after doing my 4.25 yesterday afternoon, I needed another 9 today. So I set off this morning to do a lap around Town Lake, from MoPac to the dam (10.1 miles). That didn’t happen. Instead, I ran from the Riverside bridge to about halfway between I-35 and the dam. My calves had been bugging me for most of the time, but when I got about 3 miles into the run, they just started tightening up into hard little rocks. I pretty much walked from there on back to the car around the lake, for 6.4 miles total. I could have ran some on the way back, and I did run a little, but I figure that its better to take it easy and be stronger on Tuesday then to go crazy today.

I know that I hurt my calves with bad running form that wasn’t much of an issue when I was slower. And they’re feeling better while I’m running now that my form has been corrected. But they’re still pretty painful. I think I’m going to try and schedule a massage for some point this week, to see if that will take care of the problem. Until then, I’ll use lots of stretching and try to run it out.

  1. It sounds really reasonable that you took it easy on your calves today so that you don’t sideline yourself. Hope the rest and massage help them feel better.

  2. Hi Richard,

Thanks for stopping by my weblog. I’m based out of Seattle, WA. Actually my first marathon goal is “finishing without injury”. My time goal is to help slow me down otherwise I will push myself too hard. It represents me running at a slow easy pace with plenty of breaks.
