Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Fall Marathon Thoughts

Well, I’m entered into two lotteries today. The first is the Texas Lotto which has a current estimated jackpot of $120,000,000 (or a cash option after taxes of approximately $40m). I don’t think that that will happen but, hey, you never know.

More seriously, this afternoon I’ll find out whether or not I’ve made it through the New York Marathon lottery. Winning this has a cost of about $80, oddly enough, and I figure I’ve got about a 1 in 3 chance of getting in.

That brings up other questions though. I’m really not where I wanted to be at this point. Between stretching my 5K races, a couple of minor injuries, some additional travel and work, and a small but significant amount of procrastination, I don’t have the 25-30 MPW base that I wanted to have right now. Maybe half that over the last couple of weeks. That’s pretty bad. I can cut down to a less aggressive schedule, but I’d really like to do well this year.

So. If I get in, my schedule has me doing 30 mile weeks with a 10 mile LSD run starting in two weeks. I think that I can still do that without a real problem, but I need to get my act together starting right now. Er, tomorrow at any rate. That will mean getting up early every day which is a little annoying, since that means less time to share with my lovely wife (we’ve been married less than a year). But I know that we can adjust our schedules accordingly, and getting into better shape is important to me.

So. Either NY, or M2M. I’ll know this afternoon. Check on entrant 32890 if you’re curious as to how I did and I haven’t updated. I’m really hoping that I make it, because I’ve started thinking that skipping M2M might be alright to build strength, but I know that (for me) that’s my internal laziness talking. I think I need this goal to get my mileage up to where it needs to be, odd as that might sound.

  1. Good luck with both your lotteries! I was considering NYC but never signed up so I’m out of luck. Of course if you win the Texas Lotto you can probably buy your way into the NYC Marathon! ;)

Given your dedication and persistence, I have no doubt you’ll get your training where you want it. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
