Training Comments
My current schedule keeps my speedwork on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, something I’m planning on sticking with year-round, and has a relatively sane ramp-up onto longer distances. It also has three twenty-milers, something that I feel will really help me get more comfortable with that distance.
I decided to shoot for around a 3:45 finishing time, being happy to get a solid sub-four on a course like New York. Once September rolls around I’ll be overlapping this some with faster training for the Freescale marathon here in Austin, which I hope to complete quite a bit faster. So I want NYC to be a comfortable race - still a race, but not an all-out kick-my-ass race.
Of course, there are other things to keep in mind as well, such as the RunTex Distance Challenge. If I do it, the following races would overlap:
9/6 - Congress Avenue Mile - Replaces 3 miles + gym workout
10/3 - IBM Uptown Classic 10K - In addition to planned 20 mile LSD
10/24 - Pervasive Power Charge 10 Miler - replaces 12 mile LSD
The real problem would be with the IBM 10K there in the middle. Either I’d have to skip it (forefitting any DC standing) or run it gently and keep going for another 14 miles to finish my long run. Either way, its annoying. Then again, its a strong possibility that I’ll be out of town on Labor day (9/6) anyway, making the DC a completely moot point.
Whatever happens, I’m pumped about New York!
