Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

And yet…

I dragged permission to do as much as possible from my doctor, and I haven’t really done anything other than the isometric exercises I was doing before. That’s because I’m travelling and working a lot. Not good reasons, but decent excuses. This should be the last of it though - I’m in Dallas through Monday, after which life will be a lot more normal and I’ll be hitting the gym and the veloway every chance I get.

  1. Dallas is evil. I went there once in 1998, during a heat wave in June. I had to wear a suit (or so I thought- everyone else was dressed hot casual or some such). When I arrived at the little touristy part, everything was closed but Planet Hollywood, and there, some evil man served me deep fried lasagna. I’m not lying. My impression of Dallas.

  2. Its not that bad, you just have to know where to go. Its not the most accessible city, IMO. Then again, I did live here for 18 years before moving down to Austin, so I know my way around pretty well. The West End (home of the Planet Hollywood) is a lot better now than it was then, but it wouldn’t be my first choice of a place to go for dinner, entertainment, or .. well, pretty much anywhere.

Doctors are definitely worth listening to, but I had a doctor tell me once that she thought I was running too much. This was in the beginning and I think I was doing 10-15 miles week at 2-3 miles a clip. She recommended I run 3 miles a week for no longer than 1 mile each time. I have a new doctor now.

  4. Hope your knee feels better soon. :(
    Being injured really sucks.

Ouch, Richard! I haven’t been keeping up on the blogs as well as I’d like to, and just read about your knee injury. I’m so sorry. But baby it now, and it’ll be better in the grand scheme of things. I know you know that, it’s just hard to digest sometimes. :) That urban assault race sounds truly awesome! I would do something like that!!
