Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Jumping Rope

Well, a couple of days ago I asked the peanut-gallery for a high-gain, low-time-investment cardio workout. Rebecca came through and suggested jumping rope. As it turns out, my wife had a jump rope hanging in the garage, so this evening I decided to give it a go.

First the good news. It did get my heart rate up very efficiently. Now the bad news. The best I could do was 11 revolutions in a row. At first the rope was hitting me in the ankles. After I fixed that, it started (I kid you not) hitting me in the ears. Bear in mind that when I was 8-9 I jumped rope for a couple of hours straight in some charity thing, so this was unexpected to say the least.

So I just talked to my wife about it on her way home from work. It turns out that jump ropes come in different lengths. Makes sense, but I hadn’t even thought about it. Turns out that this one, while right for her, is too short for me. The test she told me that she’d heard about was to stand on it, feet shoulder width apart, and make sure that you could bring your elbows up to 90 degrees. I could only manage about 45.

D’oh…

So, now I have another item on my shopping list.

  1. Thank god you didn’t decapitate yourself! Jumping rope sounds like a great idea though, and will surely help boost your cardio back where you want it.

MAN! I gotta say that sounds tremendous. What a great idea Rebecca. Cardio PLUS it’s GOTTA be great strength training for the feet, ankles, shins and calves. I’ll bet adding skipping to one’s routine would make a runner very LIGHT on their feet!

I’m adding one to my list too Richard! This idea has gotta get spread around.

  3. Thanks for a great idea! I’m going home this weekend, so I’ll have to look for my jump rope from when I was little and see if it “fits”. :)
