Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Another little run

And yet, this little run was (sigh) the longest I’ve gone since my injury. Gawd, but that MCL annoys me…

Anyway, it was the park again in really crappy weather. Only eighty degrees, which is great, but 85% humidity, which really sucks. I’m sweating up a storm as I’m writing this up in fact, and I didn’t run that fast.

I didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I started running - I’m not really sure when I figured it out, or even if I did. I ran 2K, walked 2 minutes, ran 2K, walked 2 minutes, then ran 2K the other direction. And called it a day. By the end of it, I was a sodden mess!

Time: 4:56 - 4:41 - 5:03 - 5:02 - 5:03 - 5:46
Pace: 7:56 - 7:32 - 8:08 - 8:06 - 8:08 - 9:17

As you can see, not exactly my best effort. My legs felt heavy, it was hard for me to keep a good form (kept forgetting to lift with my quads), and my body just felt tight and sore all over. My breathing was better, I never dropped below 2/2 or wanted to, even with the humidity factor. Also, my HR was doing the same 180-peak, but was dropping to 135 after just two minutes of walking instead of the four it took before.

So there’s hope. A little, at any rate.

Tomorrow? Gym time again. Got to work on those abs…
