Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Great two mile run

Well, I had two miles on the schedule for today, so two miles it was - pretty late too, after a birthday dinner for a very good friend of mine at Roy’s. I was near the office and had to stop back to do some end-of-day work anyway, so I hit the gym and did two miles on the treadmill at an 8:00 pace. The first half-mile was 4/4 breathing, the second and third were both 3/3, and I could have kept that up for the fourth as well (although it was getting challenging) but I didn’t, dropping to a very comfortable 2/2 .. 3/2 mix. When I was down to about 90 seconds remaining, I kicked it up to a 7:00 pace for a happy ending. Immediately after that, my heart rate was only up at around 170, too. Its all coming back to me.

Next, I hit the pool. This is a one-lane wide rooftop pool, maybe 15M long (just estimating), and was low enough that doing freestyle was problematic, so I did 100M breaststroke, then jumped into the hot-tub for two minutes, then finished with another 100M breaststroke. My arms are definately more tired than usual, which is a good thing. That was it - not a lot, but a great way to end the evening.

For those following along at home, the predictor says that I should be doing two miles (in race conditions) at about a 6:50 pace. I think that’s very achievable.
