Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Running Calculator

I just re-discovered the running calculator at McMillanRunning.com. Very cool. Doing a little math, I pulled up the correct sheet for my current goal time at Freescale - check it out here.

Now, those times are pretty fast, for me, but fairly realistic as far as where I thought I’d be at the end of this year. My injury has put a damper on things, so we’ll have to see how fast I can bounce back from it now that I’m going at full-out recovery. Just before I got hurt, I would have estimated my 5K time … on a fair day … at about 23:30. This has my goal-equivalent time at 22:00, which is where I was pretty sure I could hit by the end of the year.

I could already do 800m runs at their suggested pace, and my current 1km intervals (4:30-4:50) are close to their 4:10-4:30 pace. Actually, reading this makes me think that I should be looking at the Stamina section, which has them at 4:35-4:40. I’m probably still a little slow, the article is a touch confusing, but its good to know that I’m in the ballpark. Those times were also pretty heavily dampened by the heat, so as I start running earlier (and on a track) those times should come down nicely.

I know that I’m misusing this chart dreadfully, but that’s okay. The real question is, can I run at this level within six months? Honestly, I don’t know. I’m going to give my best effort though, and hope to find out that yes, indeed I can. Its been known to happen.

  1. Richard, you have the time to make those times for sure. You can do a lot in six months, just go nuts like I do!!! good luck!

  2. I love that calculator. It’s been a while since I’ve used it so thanks for the reminder. I’ve got some studying to do now!
