Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Friday afternoon workout

Well, its Friday, its lunchtime, and you know what that means … its upper body workout time! Anyway, today I worked out with Jason, which was fun. Did pretty much the same routine as last week, with a few variations. After starting out with five minutes on the elliptical to warm up a touch, we moved to the Hammer Strength machines:

High row - 8/6/6 reps of 220 lbs
Wide grip bench - 8/6/6 reps of 180 lbs
Shoulder press - 8/6/4 reps of 100 lbs
Bicep curls - 8/6/4 reps of 75 lbs
Dips - 10/8 reps, assisted by 50 lbs
Tricep pushdowns - 4 reps, 70 lbs
Pull ups - 10/8 reps, assisted by 80 lbs
Crunches - 1 set of 50 left, 50 centered, 50 right
Captains chair (straight leg) - 3 sets of 10
Flies - 10/8/4 reps of 135 lbs
Medial shoulder raises - 8/6/4 reps of 40 lbs
Crunches - 1 set of 50 left, 50 centered, 50 right
Captains chair (straight leg) - 2 sets of 20

I need to watch myself. I hadn’t done the wide grip bench before, and I was definately feeling very pessimistic about it at the weight that Jason had set up - turns out, I did just fine. Its as if I didn’t know (or believe in) my own strength. Since I started out so out of shape, and have had to work up from very light weights, seeing a couple of 45s on each side still makes me feel like I’m in the wrong place somehow - that I’m going to just strain and fail to move it an inch - even when its an appropriate weight. I think that that attitude held me back the last time I was trying to get serious about building muscle, and I don’t want to let it happen again.

  1. I get intimidated when I’m doing weights too. Mostly though from when I sit down on a machine, and see how much the guy before me was lifting. Especially if I didn’t see the guy before me. If I see him, and he’s huge, I understand.

  2. For someone who says he was out of shape, you are in great shape!!

  3. Ya, I’m with TJ although less so each time I get in there. We have quite a few runners in my gym too so I kinda fit with a lot of that crowd.

    Nice work Richard.

  4. Thanks - and I know that I’m getting better. Just not as fast or as easily as I might like :-) Still, ain’t that always the way it goes?
