First Spin Class
Since I had missed my speedwork yesterday, I was going to do it today instead. That would have given me three hard days in a row though, so I decided on a little cross and did a spin class over lunch - my first one.
Spin for Runners
Just in case you - as I - haven’t tried spin yet, let me take a second to tell you about it. You’re in a room with 20 or so people all on bikes. The bikes all have a very heavy spinning wheel with a direct link to the pedals, so there’s no coasting allowed. There are no gauges for speed or effort, and just knob that lets you change the resistance. The instructor will lead you for 50 minutes or so of constant cycling, moving from position to position, higher and lower resistance, standing, sitting, jumping, faux time-trials, etc.
It was pretty fun and, yeah, I’ll probably do it again. It was a different workout than running - my quads got some good high-rep motion (especially during the time-trial portions, where I’d start to slow after 20 seconds or so), and my pulse was certainly beating pretty quickly - my breathing was fine, though, so that’s good. Anyway, after that we did some low rows and incline bench (both at 180 lbs) and a few dips (50lbs assist), then called it a day and headed out to grab a quick lunch.

Funny you should be posting this today. I was just talking to the leader of my gym’s spin classes. He’s an Ironman and we were discussing the difficulties of biking through 6 inches of snow in the winter. He invited me to join his class which I’ve been thinking about since I started lifing weights. It looks like a TERRIFIC workout!

I’ve been thinking about trying one of those for a while now. Sounds fun…
