Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Seven on the trail

Did my seven mile run down at Town Lake today, which worked out very well. My lovely wife and our two pups came down with me, and they all hung out at the dog park while I ran, which was really pretty cool. That meant starting and ending at the park (I-35 and Riverside) and I decided to run clockwise this time. The weather was nice - 78 degrees, 70% humidity - even if the sun felt a little strong.

I set my timer, then turned my watch to map mode so that I couldn’t see my pace after about 3 minutes of checking it. Figured that I should just run comfortably, whatever that ended up being. The first half took 31:17, and the second half went by in 32:23 - half being an approximation only - for a total time of 63:40 for 6.9 miles or a 9:15 average pace. Since that’s midway between my ‘long’ and ‘easy’ run goals, I think that it’ll work just fine.

This was a good run. I pumped on the hills, up and down, really working my quads. Ran slower through the beautiful sections, faster when there were pretty people to pass. Basically, I just had fun.

  1. Sounds like a great run! I love the weather this time of year.

  2. You say such nice things … and yet, you haven’t told us how your half marathon went? Priorities, don’t'cha know. I may have to give you a hard time about that. But yes, the weather was a big plus today.
