Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Canine 5K

Tonight it was just myself and Bear, running together in the twilight under a sliver of a moon. What a relaxing end to a busy day of refactoring! Anyway, I was supposed to be doing three miles fairly easily since I have my 10 miler coming up this weekend. Even so, the first two kilometers went by too fast - I was breathing a very comfortable 3/3, and we just enjoyed our time together on the trail - its been too rare that we’ve had the chance to run lately, and I’m doing my best to fix that.

After doing sub-8s for the first two km, I intentionally pulled it way back. When I saw my time for the next km though I realized that I’d overcorrected - I’m not exactly the world’s best pacer, although I’m getting better, and relaxed into a bit more speed for the remainder of the run. Near the end, for the last minute or so, we just accelerated smoothly into a fun, faster run (probably 7:00 or so).

Time: 4:55 - 4:57 - 5:38 - 5:26 - 5:12
Pace: 7:55 - 7:58 - 9:04 - 8:45 - 8:22

Actually, looking at those numbers, I should have slowed down even more on after the third km. Oh, well. One of these days I’ll remember my target paces in min/km (I should really have been doing 6:00/km). Maybe. Now its off to a nice sensibly balanced dinner - I’m thinking Cream of Mushroom Soup and homemade Chex mix. And no, not mixed together.

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...

  1. I finally had my first, real canine running experience. Wait ’til you read it (it’s not up yet). Sigh.

  2. I’m looking forward to it :-)
