Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Basic run

Got up at the crack of dawn today to do three miles in my local park at a 9:30 pace. The humididty really, really sucked.

  1. Humidity? Wait, where are you again?

  2. Austin. 78 degrees, 90% humidity, “calm”. And that was pre-dawn.

How’s my day going? The first line read, “I got up on crack today”…

    Go back to sleep Mark.

  4. HUMIDITY! Uh hello I ran with GLOVES on tonight! Mark had to SHOVEL his drive way earlier this week.
On the other hand…I would run in the snow any day over humidity.

I’m glad it wasn’t just me! Today was my first run back in Texas after spending several days up in Ohio. I figured either I got really used to the cool weather really fast or the humidity today was simply AWFUL. From talking to a couple people, it was simply awful, but it was supposedly even worse yesterday. I’m glad I missed that one!

  6. Every Xmas ( I guess 2 now), a friend and I go to Olympia Washington to Run the Xmas Marathon. The air is so thick with moisture there you could chew it. We always struggle on that marathon because we can’t get enough oxygen. At 5 km we are breathing like we just finished running from the cops!

  7. Note to self: Don’t move to Texas.

Hey now, Texas is quite nice (Jon, I’m sticking my tongue out at you)… at least Austin is. The humidity hits us a few times a year. Having grown up in Virginia, where a wall of water hits you when you step out the door in the summer, I can comfortably say, “poo” to the Texas humidity.

Speaking of the crack of dawn… The other night, I really couldn’t sleep, so I got up at 1am, went to the gym, pounded through a fast 3 miles, came home, dropped into deep sleep for 5 hours and was none the less for the wear.

It’s the weirdest thing… I’ve never done that before. I felt like a zombie driving home (safely, of course… a safe zombie that wears a seatbelt, drives slowly and brakes for night cats).

    Good racing this weekend, Richard.

  12. Good luck this weekend! Don’t stress, just run!

  13. I was a little annoyed yesterday and it may have sounded like I didn’t appreciate the weather here in Austin. Let the record show that I am oh so thankful I no longer live in Houston! :-) That place has some serious humidity. But the last couple days were the worst it’s been here in quite some time.

  14. Good Luck on Sunday! I can’t wait to read your race report–that is, if I can sneak home to use the Internet. I still can’t figure out how people live with out a computer? :)
