Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

New shoe running

Well, I picked up some new shoes - Asics Gel Landreth to be precise. They felt nice and cushiony when I ran them in the store and parking lot, with lots of toe room - but I want to give them a couple of nice treadmill runs before they go out on the trails, since I can still take them back if they’re in good shape but not working for me.

I was slated to do six race-pace miles today, but I only did four. I know, two short workouts in a row, not a good trend. Anyway, the shoes were alright… but not great. At about two miles, my left foot started getting a little warm on the sole, but that went away: something I’m willing to attribute to acclimatization. Then at about mile four my shins started to get a little sore, and I pulled the workout up short.

This could be because I’m not used to long runs on the treadmill. It shouldn’t be a cushioning issue, since these are softer than a new pair of Triumphs (and much better than my current high-mileage set). It may be residual from Saturday’s long run. Still. I decided that I’ll try another four miles tomorrow evening, if I can, and see how they do then.

No spin on Monday either, unfortunately; we have an appointment with our wedding photographer to go over some pictures. And hey, its only been thirteen months since the big day…

  1. Horary for new shoes! ~ I’m in the process of looking for a new pair. So far I have been extremely happy/successful with New Balance, but I haven’t found a new model that I like, so I might decide on a pair of Asics.
