Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Seven mile loop

I wasn’t able to do my seven mile run this morning, due to having to carpool in with my wife and a bit of a line at the polling station this morning. So I did it at lunchtime. The weather here is ideal for running at the moment, in the mid fifties with moderately low humidity. There was a touch too much wind, but even so I overdressed (shorts and a long-sleeved technical shirt) - not too bad though.

This was our first real cold snap, where the high isn’t expected to reach sixty degrees. Even though it was perfect for running, there was nobody on the trail. I saw less than 100 people, both directions, over seven miles. That’s nothing, even for a lunchtime run.

I wore my Landreths by the way - figured that I might as well bite the bullet and check them out on the trail. No issues at all, much nicer than the treadmill miles I had put in before. They’re keepers. When I headed out I kept trying to slow myself down, but it felt so great to be out in the cool crisp air that I gave up and just ran happy.

My time was, I believe, a PR for this route - 59:58. I wasn’t going for time until the last mile or so, when I realized that if I turned in a sub-8 final mile I’d come in under an hour; I really tried to watch my pace and hit the quarter mile markers just a touch before I needed to - then had to give a big finishing kick because I’d started my run about 20m past the 0 mile marker heading out. That time gives me an 8:37 overall pace for 6.96 miles. Now, my goal for today’s run should have been a 9:00 pace. That’s not too far off, I think.

you’re lack of people out at lunch was probably due to everyone sitting at their desks scanning the election results on the web =)

congratulations on the shoes! sometimes it takes forever to find a pair that fits just right. and when you do, the shoe companies just go and change the last. boogers.

You hadn’t broken an hour before? I’m surprised. Good job getting there today, then!

  3. Yeah, its not actually a loop that I do very often - and when I do, its usually during a time when I’ve been trying hard to stay slow. Thanks!
