Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Weekly total

As you can see if you check my Cool Running log, this was my highest mileage week ever - even with the short run on Sunday. 32.7 miles at just under a 9:00 average pace.

Tuesday: 7
Wednesday: 7 + elliptical
Thursday: 3.5
Saturday: 6
Sunday: 9

Let’s try to keep that up. This week is off to a slow start - either my allergies really kicked in, or I’m coming down with something miserable. If I’m not feeling good then there’ll be no workouts on Monday. I will do my weekly miles though - I can do seven easily enough, even if I feel bad, just may be a little slower than normal.

I’ve moved my Tuesday elliptical workout to Thursday - that means that I should be a lot fresher for my speedwork. I missed it this week because of the election coverage, and the speed on Wednesday felt pretty good, so I think I’ll leave it that way.

This weekend: 12 on Saturday (easy), 7 on Sunday (pace).

great job on the mileage this past week! cool to see someone else using the coolrunning log as well.

hang in there with the cold/allergies. don’t forget to get lots of rest as you up your mileage. remember, the headcolds, etc are a first sign that your body needs recoup time.

  2. Wow your mileage is really getting up there. I am slightly jealous. I wish I made the time to get in more long runs.

  3. Well, you can be jealous of my mileage if I can look with envy upon your recent 5k times. Deal?
