Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Come Run with Me!

Thinking about a nice, warm run come February?

The first 40 people to make a reservation with American Airlines between November 15 and December 15 using the marathon discount code (#2125AC) will receive one free entry into this year’s Freescale Marathon or Half Marathon along with one pre-race dinner ticket, one shuttle ticket for race day and one drawing for a free night’s stay at the Hyatt Regency on Town Lake, the official host hotel for the Freescale Marathon.

See this website for more information.

Last year we had high-thirty degree weather at the start, low-fifty degree weather at the end, and a gentle breeze throughout. Its a mostly downhill course, rated the fastest in the world by the Association of Road Race Statisticians. Austin is a really fun place to be a tourist in (although, be warned, it can be habit-forming) - especially if you’re a geek, since even our parks are WiFi hotspots. And hey, the race is free (plus travel expenses). What have you got to lose?

  1. got a spare couch?

tempting, yes, but it’s either running a marathon in austin, or spending a week with some friends free of charge in hawaii…

    tough call. seriously.

  2. Well, there’s a 1/40 chance of getting a comped hotel room at the Hilton if you use the free entry. And hey, I don’t know quite what my wife would say, but as far as I’m concerned I’m willing to offer up couch space to any of the RBF who wants to give it a go. Having said that, personally, I’d go to Hawaii… especially since its Valentine’s day weekend.

  3. Oooh, that’s really tempting! I’ve been eyeing Austin, and getting a free entry would be pretty sweet. I wish the plane tickets were a tad cheaper, as that would make it so much easier to commit right now.

  4. I’ll say it sounds tempting but where’s the fun if you go running off to Hawaii?!

    hmmm…
