Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Its a dog’s life

Getting up early, going running, etc. It is for my dogs, anyway. Bowing to both my own concerns and your advice, I went out to do 4-5 miles with Bear this morning. And let me tell you, it was lousy. The weather was humid, damp, and grey - and once I started running it felt like… well, you know those days when you go running and everything just comes together like a glorious masterpiece? Pretty much the opposite of that. Basically, I just wasn’t excited about being out there in the slightest.

We were going to do four laps of the park. Once I started running I wondered about just doing three - that would still give me about four miles total. We ended up doing two. Bleah. We ran back a different way and ended up with just over three miles, and I was met at the door by Sabrina who was more than ready for her run. Fine - I swapped dogs and took her out instead. This time things went a little better, and I got another 1 1/2 miles in, including a little trail work.

All told, about 4 1/2 miles at around a 9:30 pace with plenty of pauses for interesting smells. And I’m glad I wasn’t going for ten. Now I’m hoping that the rains will come this afternoon and wash some of this foulness out of the air before tomorrow’s race. Later, I need to get my race packet and pre-drive the course, then it’ll be an early night followed by an early morning as I get ready for my first ever half marathon.

Hey, that means a guaranteed PR, right?

  1. How ’bout that weather? Tomorrow’s not looking so grand. Oh well, at least we all gotta run through the same stuff!

  2. Exactly. I drove the course today - I must admit, tackling that big downhill is concerning me a little if its too wet. Still, slowing down there may be all for the best. Have you tried it out yet? It is indeed much hillier overall than Pervasive in my opinion; the elevation chart doesn’t do it justice.

  3. Yeah, I drove the course this morning. I was also a little concerned about the downhill being slippery. Hopefully I’ve had enough practice with all the rain around here lately.

The hills come in a big bunch without much rest between them, but I don’t think individually they are all that bad. We’ll see in the morning I guess.
