Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Around the Dam

I was down for another seven miles today - the schedule had me targetting a 9:00 pace, but my legs were still a touch tired from yesterday so I ended up at more like a 9:10 for most of the run. I did a slow warmup (hard to do when its in the mid-40s outside) from the end of the S. 1st street bridge to the Congress Avenue bridge, then did a clockwise loop from there over the bridge, East to Longhorn Dam, over the dam, and then back down the south side.

By the time I got back to my starting point I had done 6.67 miles, which was close enough. I had some water, did a final half mile cooldown and a little stretching, then headed back in. I had done the main run in 1:02:37 for a 9:23 overall pace, but that included my warmup and waiting twice for traffic crossing over I-35.

Its a wonderful feeling to know that I can - pretty much arbitrarily - just go out and run seven miles. Heck, if I it wasn’t a weekday I’d have loved to finish the full loop for ten or more. Most of the time I was thinking about the upcoming marathon, and how odd it was that my scheduled 19 miler this weekend doesn’t seem like its that big a deal. It wasn’t that long ago when that kind of distance was unimaginable, and yet now - its time consuming, and tiring, but fun and very much something I know I can accomplish.

’s good.

  1. Now that’s where I want to be - where a 19 miler is no big deal. Very cool run, Richard.

Thanks for that last line Richard. It always helps me to remember that this is a process…
