Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Gerbil for Six

This has been a lame week for running - and I did so well last week too. I blame a combination of work and the weather, not forgetting that I’ve made the decision a few times to spend more time this week with my lovely wife rather than running. And you know what? If that costs me 10 minutes on my marathon time, so be it. Just don’t ask me if I’d say the same thing if I was going for a BQ … I’d like to say yes, but I honestly don’t know. Still, I’m 14 months (if not a lot more) away from that being an issue.

Today I had the choice between running in 37 degree weather on a nice trail, and running in 77 degree weather on a treadmill. I chose the latter, but I’m beginning to wonder if it wasn’t the crappier of the two options. I hate warm still air, and dislike running on the treadmill for periods of more than about 10 minutes. The combination was not pleasant.

On Saturday, I’m doing 20 miles. The weather forecast is, well, chilly to say the least - and because of family obligations, I’ll be running at around 8am. I’m figuring on four iterations of the 5 mile loop down at the Town Lake trail, stopping briefly after each lap for some PowerAde and a snack of some sort - probably a granola bar, since I don’t think warm breakfast tacos will be readily available.

I know that I said in my last post that I’d have more to say about my training, and other suggestions. I will. Later. I also haven’t been doing a great job at keeping up with other blogs. Again, I’ll be back later, and I must say I’ve been really impressed with those of you I have read who are doing much better than I, often in far harsher conditions. But for now, for me, its family time.

  1. Now, see, if you head up 7th street across I-35, you can hit Joe’s and get a taco AND some Mexican pastry. Mmmmm, Joe’s.

    Dang, I miss Austin sometimes.

After such a stellar week last week, you’ve got to cut yourself a teeny-tiny break. Especially with the weather being crazy Northern like it has been.

  2. aww…don’t beat yourself up too bad. christmas and year end stuff always throws a wrench into training plans. i wouldn’t sweat it.

i’m doing a long run on saturday too…i LOVE running on christmas morning. it’s so…apocolyptic outside. desolate streets, no one around. it’s beautiful and quiet. hope you have a great run, and a great christmas too!

I dig the big breakfast tacos at Magnolia, and the Lake Austin one is kind of on your route, but they may not be fast enough depending on how long you intended to break between laps!
