Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

State of the Blog

Well, this week has not been particularly good for my running, among other things. Just in case you were wondering if I’d been out there putting down the miles so fast and furiously that I hadn’t been able to write about it - well - I haven’t. In fact, I haven’t run at all since my last entry.

Actually that’s not 100% true. I have noticed a tendency to do things like turning a trip out to get the mail into a set of 100m butt-kicks, which feel pretty good. But that doesn’t really count as ‘distance’ now, does it?

It would be nice to say that I was going to get in a solid seven at some point today, but that’s not looking very likely unless I run in the late, late evening. At this point, I’m more inclined to write off my mid-week running and just look forward to tomorrow’s 22+ miler. Yikes!

Last weekend I had updated my blog software to MT3. So far I have yet to be able to turn off comment moderation (and yes, I’ve found the flags, and they’re all set ‘correctly’ as far as I can tell). So please bear with me for a little while longer if your messages don’t show up immediately (sorry, Meghan).

I also haven’t been keeping up with other people’s running. I will do my best to catch up this weekend, I promise. Hopefully you’ve all been able to make more of a commitment to yourselves, and your health, than I have lately. With a 30K race next weekend and the marathon a month after that, I can’t just sit on my arse right now!

Until tomorrow… do as I say, not as I do, and keep on running.

Don’t worry about your blogging too much Richard. You are missed but it’ll be worth the wait to hear from you again - especially when you report back on your 22+(?!?!?!?!) miler. Good show!

  2. In the morning, if I can drag my sorry carcass out of bed early enough, I’m going to try for the 5 miles that have so far eluded me. I love reading about what you’ve done - it has inspired me.

I don’t know how long it will take me, and I don’t care, but I am going to work up to a half marathon. Thanks for urging me on through your example.

And don’t worry about not blogging much - you’ll be back, that’s what matters.

  3. Richard -

Just a quick question for you: how useful is a pedometer to you? I’m looking on one of the links that you have on your page for running equipment, and I found what appears to be a pretty good pedomoter/heart rate monitor.

    Any input?

    Thanks,

    Silas

  4. A 22-miler? That seems so far away for me right now. Good luck on your run.

You know, the break in reports has given me time to check out some of your archives! Good luck in the 22 miler… - Mia
