Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Pictures from the 30K

The first of the 30K pictures are out, so I thought I’d share:

This one was taken somewhere between mile 4 - where I dropped my jacket - and mile 6. I know this because if you look closely you can see that I’m still holding a Gu in my left hand.

I should take this time to say a big “Thank you!” to Marcus for getting me this earwarmer (and the matching gloves that I’d dropped with my jacket) for Christmas. This was the first time it had been cold enough to take them out, and I was very grateful for them!

I tucked my earband into my shorts at around mile ten, and we’re out of the subdivision but we have a turn lane, so this one must be somewhere between miles 14 and 16.

By the way, what’s with my postitioning here? It looks like my right leg is way too far towards the center of my body. I’ve noticed at times - usually on treadmills - that my ankle will brush my calf as I run occasionally, but chalked that up to the unnatural machine influence. Either that, or the picture angle is misleading.

I wish there was a bit less space between me and the clock. That, and I’m not sure that I’m quite in focus here, although the time certainly is.

Other than that, I think this is a great, strong finish shot. I’d really picked up the pace down the last 100m or so, and I think it shows.

No kidding, you’ve got some serious muscle in those legs. And you’re smiling! I don’t even know how many miles a 30K is, but I’m very, very impressed by how easy you make it look. Congratulations!

Oh, and I forgot to say that I always thought that picture on your main page was not of you, but was instead a picture of a model you’d found somewhere to just sort of represent running, like a cover shot of a magazine or something. Now that I know it’s you, I’d say you could have a second career as a fitness model!

  14. Aw, you guys. Thanks. And for the record, a 30K is 18.6411358 miles long (approximately).
