Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Trailing can be beneficial

I wasn’t feeling too good on Sunday, and I ended up getting up for real around mid-morning today. This meant that I was going to have to work late, which meant in turn that the likelyhood of getting in an evening long run was slim. So I decided to run while I was still a little groggy and use it as a (late) wake up call.

Take the standard Mary Moore Searight Park 2km asphalt loop. Pretty boring, right? Now chop off a third of a mile of asphalt and replace it with half a mile of singletrack (a few rocky sections, some tree roots, etc). Doesn’t that sound more appealing? I did ten laps of the new 1.4 mile loop and ended up with 14.24 miles total in 2:18:36, or a 9:44 average. I did a little under 9:30 on the asphalt, and about :30 slower on the trail, which was right what I was going for.

I am a little concerned about my shoes, though. I’m in a new pair of Saucony Triumphs, since my Landreths aren’t giving me quite enough heel support with my touchy achillies. They were fine on my heel, but my forefoot got a little sore after the first 10 miles. I’ll see how they do over the next few weeks.

My current plan, if they don’t settle down, is to wear them for all of my remaining runs - including the 3M half marathon on Sunday - but switch back into my Landreths for the full 26.2 in three weeks time. That should give my tendons a nice break, and provide me with some softer, lighter shoes for the big day.

I hope that your weekends went smoother than mine did!

  1. Hey there! Thanks for the comments. I was really happy with my Triumphs. Funny that you mention your forefoot–that’s been my one thing I would have liked to see in all of the Saucony’s that I owned–more forefoot padding. I didn’t notice it when trail running but if I ran on the street for 10+ miles my forfoot would be sore the next day. Nothing terrible, but I always thought they could use just a bit more padding. I’ll have to see if the Asics are any better.

No, no time for the Freescale and I have to reveal that I’m running the half with my full marathon in Oklahoma City on 4/24.

  2. Boy, I was having some serious heel pain a couple of weeks ago (gone now thankfully). I ended up buying some Dr. Scholl heel inserts and that sure helped me.

Hope your new Saucony Triumphs work out okay. I never had experienced major problems with my feet before…but it sure makes me appreciate my feet more now. Good luck on your race, too, by the way! Kirsten
