Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Vindication

Run-Far just changed their site to show the 3M split from 6.8 to 6.7 miles as I had suspected. Cool.

In other news, I haven’t run since Sunday. I’m heading out of the office right now to go to the gym for some good core and lower body workout to get the last of the race-toxins on their way out of my system. Over the next three days I want to do two running days, one of which will hopefully be a set of Yasso 800s.

Just 12 more days…

    Hi Richard,

Congrats on a great race this weekend! I’m glad to hear that you are resting yourself at the beginning of this week!

I did the Yasso 800s last weekend, mostly because I’m grasping at strings for a pace to run at Freescale. I read on a website that people typically run a marathon a bit slower than their Yasso 800 equivalent pace. As in 6-10 minutes slower from their average 800 equivalent pace. I also read somewhere that you can cut off some of those minutes if you use a shorter recovery time than the Yasso 800s recommends (which is to “rest” for the same length of time as it took you to do the 800s). So I jogged 400m as recoveries, rather than “resting” for a period of time. So, we’ll see how it works out for both of us!

In reference to your comment on my blog, I guess it depends on what you mean my 100% on the starting line. I’ll still have the shin splint, I’m not even sure if if would go away if I did nothing for these 2 weeks of tapering, I dunno. But I’ve been managing it well enough that I don’t anticipate it impinging upon my race. I’ve not put a single mile down on pavement since it hit, so I’m a little bit curious about how it will take to pavement. The thing about shin splints is that they just have to warm up, once you’re calf muscle is warm, they cease to hurt.

    Are you getting excited yet?

  2. 12 days already? That’s a really tight race schedule. You must be really pumped to come off a great 1/2 and now on to the full. Hope the core stuff went well.

  3. Meghan - thanks for the information. I’ve never had a shin splint, and didn’t really have a good feel for how long they take to heal. I’m glad its manageable for you. And yes, I’m excited!
