Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Wonderful Run

I went out for a run before today’s ARC meeting. I drove down to the meeting ahead of time and ran down to the MoPac stretching area. I was trying to get there at 6pm to join up with friends, but I saw them leave just before I got there; naturally, I tried to run really quickly to catch up with them. It took me thirteen minutes flat to get there, but they still beat me. Unfortunately, my Garmin hadn’t syncd up and I didn’t know how fast I was going.

After doing a little light stretching and chatting, we went back to Lucy’s Boatyard at a 9:30 pace. It took me 29:30 for the round trip. I don’t have my records in front of me, but assuming the 9:30 pace was approximately correct, that gives a distance of 1.74 miles which sounds about right. That means that my trek down was done at a 7:30 clip.

The cool thing is that even with no warmup and no pre-run stretching, I felt really great the whole time. My leg was a tiny bit tight, but it didn’t bother me after the first couple of minutes (and yes, I stretched it out at the halfway point). I’m feeling pumped about Sunday now.

Oh, and the meeting? Too fun. I got to meet a lot of people, drink some beer, and listen to Greg McMillan talk about training. That’s a pretty cool way to spend an evening.

Days like today, I love being a runner.

EDIT: It looks like the distance was more like 1.65 miles, but I’d misremembered my total running time which was 28:32. That gives me 7:53 for the trip down (more reasonable, since I was doing comfortable 3/2 breathing and not really pushing myself that hard) and 9:25 for the trip back. Just for the record. Not that anyone else really cares.

  1. Cool, Greg McMillan.

Sometimes when I am going to the park I will put the Forerunner on the dashboard to let it sync up while I’m driving. The park is close but its sync’d by the time I get there.

  2. It usually syncs pretty fast for me too - I’ll turn it on a little before hand sometimes; yesterday though it just plain didn’t want to sync up. Who knows?

    Richard,

    But we do care!

Do you want to meet up at some point this weekend? Put some faces to our blog stories? That would be cool. Send me an email if you’re interested.

Good luck this weekend! You’re going to do wonderfully. And it’s going to be painfully fun!

    See (?) you soon!

So, cool. Especially getting to listen to McMillan. I imagine he’d be pretty fascinating to listen to.

Your gravatar rocks Richard. Mine doesn’t show up very well. I’ll need to lighten up the text.

  5. Regarding your comment on my site, I think beer and pizza’s a perfect meal. Plenty of good carbs, at least. : )
