Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Treadmill 400s

Alright, back to it. My post-marathon blues are wearing off, my life is getting a bit more sorted, and its the season to get fast. Or at least faster.

I didn’t feel like messing around with the trail today - my leg still feels a touch spotty, and if I run with bad form for a mile or two it starts to ache, so I ended up doing speedwork on my office treadmill instead. Cool, huh? I set it for 9.5mph at a 1% incline and did 12 repetitions of around 1:40, with about 90 seconds of walking between each one (on the next-door treadmill).

I say “around” because I don’t like jumping onto a running treadmill, so my approach is to warm up, then set the speed high and run for an appropriate time, then slap the “pause” bar which stops everything, then speed up for the next one. 400m at that pace should be closer to 1:30, but it counts the speed-up time so I fudge things a little.

You know what? They felt damn good, too. Sometimes you just have to get out there and run quickly. I had no issues whatsoever from any of my lingering aches. I know that I need to do more stretching, and I feel like I really need to get into Yoga or some other general healthy flexibility class, but I’ve just been too busy lately.

So. I’m back in the game. Tomorrow morning I’m volunteering to help with a math competition (I know, I’m a geek) with my wife (yup, she is too), so running will have to come later in the day. But it will. I’m planning on doing somewhere around 6-8 miles, and I hope that its a good day as far as these old creaky legs go.

My goal for the next month or two is to get back up to 100%. I want to be doing at least one set of speedwork per week, running 4 times a week, doing 10-12 miles on the weekend, and just enjoying the weather (it’s cooled off from the mid 80s to the mid 50s right now, which is great for recreational running). If I can get my arse into the gym at least once a week, that would be a Good Thing too.

oohhhhh! Math! I remember when you told me your dad had a PhD in Math. I was so jealous! Glad your feet are healing and you’re feeling like running again!

That’s a great idea for doing speedwork indoors. Never really thought about it before, but I’ll have to try it sometime…
