Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

2005 Capitol 10K

Cool - another fun race. I knew going into this that I wasn’t terribly well prepared, so I mainly wanted to get out there, have fun, PR, and come in somewhere under 50:00. I would have liked something in the 47-48 range, but I wasn’t counting on it.

I got to the race about an hour early, and did a bit over two miles for a warmup. Next I did some drills with the Gazelle group and a bit of stretching with Jay and Alex. At about 20 minutes before the start I lined up fairly near the front of the red chute, ready to go.

It was a bit sunnier than I would have preferred, but its only going to get hotter from here on out, so that’s alright. The race itself was pretty uneventful - I realized about a mile into it that it wasn’t going to be anything special as far as time went so I mainly tried to run well, keep good form, and have a great time. I think I achieved all three of those goals.

My final time was 49:39, a 7:59 pace and 1061/4986 runners. Again, not what I’d like to think I’m capable of (compare last year’s much hillier Turkey Trot), but it was reasonable for the training I’ve (not) done and the effort I put out. Last year’s time was 58:11, so I know I shouldn’t feel too bad about it! I also PRd by exactly two minutes over my previous 10K record.

Well. Maybe you should not train more often! Sounds like a fun run - just what the doctor ordered. Good for you! - Mia

Wow. Nearly 9 minutes faster than last year and a PR of 2 minutes in the 10k. I’m going to quit training and see if I get faster too.

    Great run. Congratulations!

  3. Congratulations!

  4. Yes, I’d say you totally cleaned up on that one, Richard. Two minutes off a 10K PR is fabulous. Great job!

  5. nice race!

  6. Sounds like a great race…and congrats on the PR with no real training for that race. What an improvement.

    Great race, Richard!

  8. Nicely done. It should make you pretty happy to think what you could do with solid training and a good race.
