Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Short Circuit

Getting up at 5AM after a time change was supposed to be difficult, but in fact it was really easy. After all, I had a very positive reason to do so - it was my first drill back with Gilbert.

We ran the 1.6 miles to Austin High for a warmup and did our standard regimen of pre-workout drills. Next came the circuits, but only two of them. For each one we were to run 800M easy, do 10 step-ups with each leg, 10 pushups, 10 crunches, 10 vertical jumps, and 10 lunges with each leg - then repeat the whole mess without resting. These used to kick my ass, and they still do - my first run was done at an 8:00 pace, my second at an 8:45.

After that, and before I really got my breath back, we moved over to the football field and ran three 50M sprints while holding our breath. That’s harder than it sounds, by the way. Next we did two minutes of fast-feet drill, during which I was told to move my arms more from the shoulder. Hmm. Finally another three 50M breathless sprints. Before the third one Gilbert told me to move my shoulders even more, and I did - it was easier than the earlier ones had been, so that’s something to take away.

That was pretty much the workout. Another 1.6 miles to cooldown at around a 9:45 pace, then off to the office.

Its good to be back.

wow…that sounds tough. funny how breezing through a long run seems so easy, but some short sprints can kick your butt. it sure is humbling, but exciting!
