Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Tracy

Tracy had a question about trackbacks - and wanted to see how they worked. If you haven’t read her site by the way, I recommend it - insightful, zany, and just occasionally there’s something about running ;-)

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...

  1. Pardon my complete stupidity, but I still don’t “get it”. I mean, you linked to my site… is that all you did? And that’s how it shows up as a trackback on my site? it just knows?

And why do they call it “trackback”… because it seems like it tracks FORWARD.

  2. Thanks for the advertising by the way. Very kind of you!

    “awww shucks!”

  3. Yes - it just knows. Trackbacks reflect a special kind of “ping” sent to your site. And most blogging software will (or can be set to) scan any post for URLs, download those URLs, and see if there is any information within the webpage that gives a ping address. If you do a view-source on your post, you’ll see this line in the middle of some RDF data:
    trackback:ping=”http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/2202650″

That’s what my blog software looks for to figure out how to communicate the fact that I’ve linked to you to to your blog software. Ain’t technology grand?

  4. i seeeee.

So I’ll have to hunt around to see how I can get TypePad to spamblock my trackbacks too like you said. Cool.

I’ll give it a try. Seems like it’s more interesting for me than anyone else - seeing where people are linking to me.
