Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

900M Repeats

This morning we met at the usual place and then ran over to Zilker park for some 900M repeats. These are more challenging than 800M repeats on the track because the course we run is a little hiller - that, and they’re 100M longer. We were supposed to do them at our goal 10K pace or a little harder, but not work too hard.

I wasn’t feeling too strong on the run over there, even though it was just 1.7 miles at around a 9:30 pace I was noticably breathing. I think its probably a combination of allergies and the fact that this is the first speedwork I’ve really done all year. Anyway. Got to the park, did our drills, and then broke up into teams to do the runs, with an admonition not to go too hard and instructions to do a 90 second jog between each lap.

I had worked out yesterday that a 4:15 time would be about a 7:35 pace, or a 47:15 10K time, which is probably reasonable for me now on a good day. Having figured that out, I proceded to go way too fast right out of the gate and clocked a 3:54 initial time (a 7:00 pace). Next time I tried to go a little slower and did about 4:10 (7:27 pace), then did a 4:00 (7:09) and ended up with a 4:12 (7:31) for my final lap. I left at that point rather than doing my fifth because I had an early meeting to get to.

So. I went faster than I should have done, and I worked harder than I should have done. I’m not sore, but I could probably have worked this better. I did try hard to concentrate on form, particularly my shoulder movement, more so as I neared the end of each lap.

I have 8-10 miles to do on Saturday, a 7 mile progressive run on Monday, and then on Tuesday we’re doing 1 mile repeats at the same (theoretical) 10K pace as today. I’d better start off a little slower next time around!

Richard, you should ask Coach before going out and trying a Progressive 7 miler on Monday this soon in your return to running. Just in case he would want you to either go a little easier or maybe run slightly shorter. You don’t want to get hurt, after all, and this is a lot of intensity for you after a bunch of weeks where you were sort of on vacation, running-wise.

The vacation comment reminded me just how abnormal we are. Jay, you missed it this morning. He told us to take it easy and someone was like, doesn’t taking it easy mean still being in bed right about now?
