Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Running in Radebeul

So, for the first time I managed to go running! Before I either have been too tired (at first), too busy (more commonly) or it was already dark. Anyway, check it out! I went clockwise, and the slow North straight stretch on the left hand side of the map is a damn steep staircase, over 500 steps up, along a terraced vineyard. The GPS didn’t like it for whatever reason, which is really disappointing. Then again, I only made it 2/3 of the way up the first time without walking, and under 1/2 the second time. Check out that elevation profile - its not lying!

Over an hour for 5.6 miles is not great, but between the stairs and a lot of pausing to look around, that’s fine. I ranged from an 8:15 to a 9:30 pace, scenery dependent, most of the time. My last quarter mile or so dipped deep into the sixes, which was a whole lot of fun.

More later, I promise. Its a wonderful place to run here, the weather and terrain is perfect. It would be better if my Forerunner charger hadn’t broken leaving me with around one hour remaining. I may have to buy a 301 this weekend if I can find one, with that as an excuse!
