Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Fun Morning

I had planned to be out on the trails by 6am, but a late night out with some friends meant that I “slept in” and was up and running for 7am instead. I met up with the later Gazelles down at RunTex and hooked up with Brian for an easy run and some good conversation, tossing back seven miles at a comfortable 9:30 pace. We were able to start off nice and slowly for the first mile, which made it even more pleasurable. The heat had only just begun, but with the humidity coming off the lake we were both sweating pretty well by the end of the run.

Once we finished, we rested 5-6 minutes and then did eight 100M strides, something I want to get into the habit of doing every time after my long runs. A bit of milling around was followed by the usual mass stretching frenzy, once again led by Jay, who I then half-heartedly joined for some core strength work. He was doing a “canoe” type crunch that I just wasn’t getting right for some reason, but the rest of the work was fine.

After that, Marcus and Bill showed up. They’re doing the Urban Assault race together this year, since I’m sitting it out, but I was more than happy to join them for a planning ride testing out some possible route combinations. We went through about fifteen miles all told, and hit all but two of the checkpoints - the last two will add another ten miles or so to the total distance.

So - seven miles, sprints, stretching, and biking - all before breakfast! Not a bad way to start the weekend.

  1. Strides after a long run? I think I’d break something for sure. :D Good job, Richard. And way to go on the intervals from the last post. Nice tight timing. How’s that glute today? That deep pain in the glute (heh, heh) can also be a sciatic injury, so be careful with it. Hopefully its all gone away by now.

  2. Thanks Jon - although most (all?) of the credit for the timing of those 400s goes to Jay - and yes, that glute soreness has completely disappeared, making way for my upcoming quad/calf soreness after tomorrow morning’s workout - 300M hill climbs at Wilke!

  3. Oh - and doing those strides theoretically gives you a lot of speed benefit for almost no cost - getting two workouts for the price of one. Rest for 6-8 minutes first, getting your HR down, and then have at ‘em!
