Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Another Slow Run

This was supposed to be a seven mile progressive run, but the trail was closed due to a large triathalon (fair enough) so it became a 7.5 mile comfortable run accompanied by my lovely wife. I was planning on doing two laps of the neighborhood, the first one easy and the second one harder, but ended up just wandering around and finishing up in the park. The weather was interesting - 80 degrees but very humid, right on a front line.

Things started out well. The first mile went down in 9:30, the second in 9:10, the third in 8:46. After that we started taking the occasional break, and my records get spottier, but I think I stayed around the 8:00-8:30 point for most of the rest of the way. Again, not a fantastic training experience but a very pleasant way to spend an hour chatting with my wife.

One odd thing that happened hit me on my last lap of the park: the breeze was picking up, and I was getting hit with alternating gusts of hot and cold air, often from the same direction. Obviously there were some rival air masses duking it out around me. A little strange, but interesting nonetheless.

  1. wow, i had no idea your wife was a runner too! i really enjoy the times that smsmh will come out and run or cycle with me. it gives us lots of time to just chat with eachother.

  2. Actually, my wife was cycling rather than running as well. Sorry to mislead you.

  3. “alternating gusts of hot and cold air” Hmm…isn’t that how tornadoes start? What a strange experience.
