Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Marathon Training Schedule

I’ve been looking over my schedule for the next four months, and I thought I’d share it with the peanut gallery. Basically, my weekday runs are pretty static:

Monday 10 miles, pace or progressive
Tuesday 6-7 miles, form/strength Gazelle workout
Wednesday 4-5 miles, recovery run
Thursday 6-7 miles, speed Gazelle workout
Friday Gym workout

That leaves the weekend. Sunday is, quite emphatically, a rest day, and Saturday is reserved for our long runs:

July 2 16
July 9 12 in Dallas
July 16 18 hills
July 23 14 easy
July 30 20
August 6 15 hills
August 13 20
August 20 12 hills
August 27 22
September 3 12 hills
September 10 22
September 17 12 easy
September 24 18 hills
October 1 10 10K race
October 8 20
October 15 14
October 22 10 10 mile race - at pace
October 29 10
November 5 26

Looks like a fun summer!

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...

  1. 10 miles at pace EVERY Monday?! Is this by chance the intermediate PSYCHO marathon plan? You amaze me Richard. I can’t even comment on the hills and long runs. After this you are either going to be the image of the lighning racer, or you are just going to spontanously combust right there on the course. :D

  2. Well… we’re only doing seven miles on Mondays until July. Is that any better?
