Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Moonlight Race…

Do you live in or around central Texas? If so, have you signed up for the Moonlight Margarita Run yet? If not, why on Earth not?

Here’s the deal. Its a mostly flat 5K starting near the Rock (ie: the Town Lake Trail @ MoPac) and running East along Cesar Chavez for about a mile and a half, then turning around and coming back. The first half is slightly uphill, the second slightly downhill. Its about two and a half weeks from now, on Thursday the 4th, at sunset. Yup, sunset, so it will have cooled off at least a little. After the race, there’s a TexMex party you won’t want to miss.

There are three bands along the way - pretty good for an out and back 5K. All benefits go to the Town Lake Trail foundation, and are earmarked for building a new public restroom on the North side of the trail, West of I-35, to replace the (let’s face it, fairly nasty) one that’s being demolished with all the new development up there. You want a nice restroom, don’t ya? Isn’t running a 5K a great way to help build one?

This evening my lovely wife and I were out putting up “Public Notice” signs along the course, so hopefully people will see them and be not only informed, but inspired to register and run as well.

Did I mention that the after-party includes Margaritas? And that your race packet will include at the very least glow in the dark goodies, and possibly blinkies too? Along with the obligitory race shirt, of course.

Anyway, enough about that. If you’re in the area, why not come and join the fun? Let’s go race!

  1. Your description makes me wish I did live in the area. What a cool race!

  2. Sounds like fun and I LOVE margaritas, but I will be out of town for the race. Good luck to TLTF, a new restroom will be very nice (the other one scares me).
