Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Seven Mile Recovery

Not much to report here, really. It felt really nice to get here at 6:00, much nicer than 5:45, which is a little odd. The weather was beautiful, and it was almost disappointing to head off for a comfortable lap around the lake instead of doing speedwork; not that I could have done much speedwork the way I felt. Doing just two hard runs per week (and the long run) means that I feel more able to go “all out” on them, which means in turn that I need these recovery runs.

We took 1:04 to do the loop, which works out to a touch over a 9 minute pace, including a break for water at the MoPac footbridge and another one near the Milago condos. Just like last Tuesday I felt weak, and stiff, and a little tired. The pace was just about perfect for me.

In the evening I ate a good bowl of pasta for dinner - fettucini with mushrooms and red bell peppers in a pesto cream sauce - and drank a ton of water. Coach told us to eat and hydrate well in preparation for Saturday’s 20 miler, also to bring Gu or whatever else we’d use during an actual marathon. It wasn’t until I read that that I realized how blase I’ve become about some things, like the hilly 17 miles we did two weeks ago. I hadn’t done anything special for it at all.

Tomorrow, however, is a total rest day, and I’m looking foward to it. I may even sleep in until, oh, 6AM!

  1. Good luck on Saturday, Richard. Hope it stays cool for ya. I hadn’t really thought about gels at this point, but I’ll need to soon. Can’t imagine what I’ll bring.
