Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Much needed recovery

You know, I didn’t really think that yesterday’s workout was much of a workout. Still, it seems that it was - if not the easy seven miles, then the 20 strides at the end. How did I come to this conclusion? Well, today I met up with Frank and Sean for our normal recovery run, and we spent about 1:08 doing the loop. That’s like a 9:45 overall pace (including two brief water stops). Call it a 9:30 actual running pace. I don’t even know when the last time we’ve done that loop so slowly would be.

We started joking about it around 4 miles into the run, but none of us were actually interested in picking it up any. The idea for these workouts is pure form, recovery, and mileage anyway; we’re not going for any kind of speed. Just as well, really. It did give me a chance to talk more about NYC with both of them, since they did it last year. I’m really looking forward to November.

Tomorrow morning I’ll be doing 8×1000M track repeats at a 6:45 pace, Thursday evening I’ll be running a 5K and trying to knock two minutes off my PR, and Sunday I’m up for the Muddy Buddy. All things considered its probably a good thing that we’re just down for 15 miles on Saturday - although checking the schedule it looks like they’ll be hilly. Oh, well. I just have to really make sure I’m well fueled, hydrated, and stretched. Yes, in retrospect I have to agree that slow was just fine for today.

Man, you have been doing good work and getting great results Richard. I think you are poised for some tremendous racing in the future.

  2. Thanks, Mark. I’m counting on it!
